Crafts of Yore: Knitted Hats

I don't really knit much these days, because poke-y sticks are just too attractive to the littles. But, I used to knit, for a short time — made some hats, some dolls, a blanket. Ravelry inspired me to take these pics of past projects, and it's also tempting me to knit again. I kinda, sorta want to make a sweater for myself. [Insert nervous nail biting here.] I'm thinking about the Sophisticated Rustic Jacket over at Interweave's Knitting Daily. Has anyone made it? Suggestions on another sweater type garment that would flatter a big breasted, big waisted gal like me?

The beehive hat is from Stitch 'N Bitch Nation. The stripe-y hat is Tychus from Knitty. And, the baby bonnet is from Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I added the fuzzy crochet border. The weird baby head is a leftover Bedfellow head that now gets used as a ball. I left the yarn string on it and the kids love to chuck it. The eyes and nose were done in Photoshop. Sorry, I don't remember too much about yarns and needle sizes.

We Care, Not

Well, that little Heather Ross preview was exciting, no? On the Sewing Mamas board, I read that the other colorways are going to be pretty fantastic, too. I'll keep you updated if I get my hands on some more pics.

Because life is a series of ups and downs, today's mail brought me disappointment in the form of one obviously ripped open package with no contents. A plastic bag with a pre-printed and very generic apology from the USPS provided little comfort. The package was supposed to have a special Etsy purchase from Little Robot &mdash a one-of-a-kind hand painted enamel brooch with silver surround. Sigh. Lindsey is a great vendor, she graciously refunded my PayPal even before the packaging arrived. If you feel like it, check out her Etsy shop and spend a little money, maybe offset some of her loss.

Sneak Peek: New Heather Ross Fabrics

***Update #2***
You can see pics of this line over at Heather's website.

***Update***
Sneak Peek is over while we anxiously await the finalized designs.
************

I'm excited to reveal a preview of some new, almost-finished fabric designs by Heather Ross. The line comes out in May from Westminster. See the collection together over here. I can't wait to make something out of the mermaids or the seahorses or the seaweed — perhaps a shirt for me, something similar to Meg's cutest evah Western.

***Coming up soon***
My namedropping post, wherein I will explain: how Tony Bennett called me, "Baby;" why Heather Ross is my new best friend; who I have in common with Britney Spears; and more!

P.S. Heather also has a new website in the works, so we'll be able to keep up to date on what that crafty gal is up to. Have you seen this project she did for Home Companion?

Soup & Bread

400px

Two of my favorite things — yum!

It was a cold rainy day here yesterday, with snow in the mountains! That only happens once or twice a year. We stayed home and made bread, looked for rainbows, caught hail in our mouths, painted pictures, and watched videos. On rainy days without school, filling up the ten and a half hours that papa isn't home is always interesting (How do you do it Eren?). What do you do, especially when you have a little one that makes doing bigger kid things a little challenging? We have a list of things to do while he's napping, but that still leaves at least nine hours. And, someone always seems to have a bit of a cold, which makes me not want to take them out into the cold.

On a different note: I love it when people share their favorite cookbooks. The Soup & Bread book is one of mine (Patchwork Slaw with Curried Vinaigrette; Chicken with Pasta Soup; Oatmeal Molasses Bread). I love a cookbook with prose, and Crescent Dragonwagon is a great storyteller. I love reading about the life she and her husband created at Dairy Hollow House in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Awhile back I looked online to see if the Inn was still going and was sad to see that it is closed (now a writer's retreat) and that Crescent's husband had died — hit while bicycling.

I just checked and Amazon didn't have the book. I'm sure you can find it used.

You think... you wink... you do a double blink.

wip
One year and five minutes later a WIP is finished. I just had to add the already made flowers. It's for my sis — she just opened an etsy shop, by the way.

I made up the pattern for the hat (just a single crochet) and the flowers were from this scarf that I made from Needlebook's free pattern. After enjoying wearing it a couple times, I ended up taking the scarf apart because it curled (not sure of the official knitting term for that rolling thing that happens sometimes). The hat yarn is Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky — so super soft. The flowers were scrap, thrifted acrylic and cotton.

Because this blog is not yarn fiber biased, here is a sewing WIP. The little guy saw Archie and Olive at Wee Wonderfuls and wanted one. I'm a sucker for this guy — I'll sew him anything, anytime.

I *Heart* Databases

label
There's something about Ravelry that feeds my inner-OCD — it's the enormitude (made up word) of interconnectivity in an online database — I love it. It satisfies my deep need to connect all people that I know, sort of know, should know, will know, etc. Bethany suspected that I was lost over there, hence the no posting here.

While I've been "gone" I've been searching through other fiber folks' finished objects, queued projects, misc patterns, etc. I saw that Fricknits is thinking about yarn while she's on blog break — that made me happy. I bought my first yarn for socks from Emily. Hopefully, I'll carve out the time to do it. I've never worked with double pointed needles, and wonder how the project will live with so many busy little hands around here. I'm a sucker for pink and red.

An informal focus group showed only one, of three people in my LYS, is up and running with Ravelry. Come on people! Get over there already, so we can connect.

Good Day Sunshine

customer2

complete
We interrupt this bad mood with a ray of sunshine.

I got my Ravelry invite yesterday and am adding projects as fast as I can. I always thought the invite part of Ravelry sounded quite snobbish, but, it's just a way to slow things down while they get the Beta version worked out.

A few things I noticed about my projects:

1) I don't invest brain cell on remembering what yarn I used. I think Ravelry will help me with this.

2) I crochet a *lot* more than I knit. I'd like to knit more, so that I can make up my own designs.

3) I like colorful projects. Who would have thunk?

4) I like to make up my own designs. I didn't realize how many times I've done this.

5) I don't write those designs down. Sad.

So, if you are already at Ravelry, make me a friend and I'll make you a friend. And, if you are not there, go sign up for an invite. They're real nice.

Big, Bad Wolves

Senorita Capasita Roja
Thank you for all the mama support in my last post. Wouldn't it be lovely if we could all find the same in our local communities?

With my remaining half brain cell that is still functioning, I've been attempting to have some Deep Thoughts (tm). You know — the who am I? what am I doing? kind of stuff. Plus, I'm revisiting why I'm not so nice to people sometimes. You don't see a lot of the Mean Michelle here. But, if you were my sister — woo boy — you would have lived it. If you were some young girl wearing the wrong clothes and drawing the wrong thing in high school art class, you probably got an earful, too. What is wrong with my brain/self that would have me do such things? The pathetic thing is that I still have that big bad wolf in me. Get close enough and I *will* bite you at some point.

Then, today, a friend sent a link about a possible/probable design theft. That kind of stuff really makes me want to bite someone.

Speaking of teeth: Has anyone had a young child put under full sedation for dental work? My little guy has three cavities, older bro has none. It's not as bad as some things, but I still feel like a horrible parent. Maybe I passed on weak DNA, or didn't brush enough, or nursed on demand, or shared my nasty mouth flora. And, now, I'll have to put him in what seems like a dangerous situation because of it. [insert mama wolf growl here]

And, while I'm at it: would someone, please, turn up the daylight hours or fast forward to spring? Remember the what-does-your-calendar-year-look-like idea? Well, mine is a vertical format with January at the top — pretty standard stuff — but, for me, winter is over after New Year's eve. January 1st should be the first day of spring. And, on my calendar the seasons are not created equal. Spring, summer, and fall can split up eleven months as they wish, but old man winter only gets December.

Would you like a side of Technorati with that Del.icio.us Web Feed?

Today's my second blogiversary.

It took two years of convincing, but my friend Julia finally got me to add an email subscription service to this blog. I, recently, started with FeedBlitz, but didn't like the ads. Right now I'm trying out FeedBurner.

I've set it up so that subscribers get each new blog post (not just shop updates), in full, sent as an html email. I might make some changes — perhaps only post a teaser, instead of the full post — please consider it a work in progress. So, if you want to sign up for Green Kitchen emails, the form is over in the right side bar.*

I'm also trying out a couple widgets from AddThis. One, you'll see, is at the bottom of each post. It allows readers to easily save blog posts into their choice of social bookmarking: Del.icio.us, Google Bookmarks, Facebook, etc. The other addition is the all-in-one button for RSS feed subscription, so you can read Green Kitchen over at Bloglines, or Technorati, or My Yahoo, etc. If you want to read this blog in a feed aggregator, the RSS button is under the email subscription form in the right side bar.*

Before making these changes I only had a Bloglines link, because that is how I choose to ingest my 393 craft blog habit! It took all this time for me to *get* that everyone likes to take their internet a little differently. Apparently only about 11 percent of internet users even use feed readers. You mean everyone's not just like me? ;)

Of course, all this change is motivated by my Etsy shop. Now that Green Kitchen is serving up more than just posts, I want to make sure that y'all are getting your bookmarks, or emails, or feeds, as you like them.

Suggestions?

-----------

*If you click over from a post title in a feed reader, my side bar doesn't show all it has to offer. Please click on the Green Kitchen banner and it will bring you to the home page, which will have all the side bar content. Sorry about this glitch. Anyone know how to fix it? Alice?
Thanks to Karen in Wichita for the technical help.
