Six Surprising* Things

I Used to Eat Shortening
When I was a kid I would take a spoon, scoop out a big hunk of vegetable shortening, and eat it. I liked it. I also liked that it grossed people out. I remember the feeling of my teeth biting into it. It's a good memory.

I've Been Known to Have Dirt in my Bed
When I asked my sister what was weird about me she said, "Well, there's the dirt in the bed thing. You're the only person I know that has had to sweep their bed out." Most of my life I've been a gardener, also a person who doesn't like to wear shoes, hence the dirt in the bed. I'm not one to wash my feet before bed. In my defense my sister said, "You know, it was real dirt, not crackers and stuff." Apparently dirt is better than crackers. I agree.

No-Shoes-Wearing "Weirdo"
I didn't wear shoes to highschool for a whole year &mdash a benefit to living in a temperate climate. The weird thing was that the adults didn't even mention it. The kids were totally bothered by it, so of course I kept doing it.

Tattoo You, Not Me
I don't have a tattoo, which is highly surprising for my age and location. I'm too much of a control freak to let someone else permanently mark me.

Daddy Dearest
My dad and I didn't talk to each other for six or seven years — I can't remember how long exactly. Recently we've reconnected and both act like nothing ever happened.

Billy Joel
I've been listening to the same Best of Billy Joel album in my car for at least a year. It's one of the ways I'm permanently damaging my four-year-old.

I'm tagging Blaize, Futuregirl, Bitter Betty, and Project Pink Suitcase.

* I changed it from "Weird" to "Surprising" because I think Juju had a valid point.

i heart billy joel. not now, of course. but "summer, highland falls," "say goodbye to hollywood" and "captain jack" are all on my i-pod. there's probably a couple other there, too.

I sort of cheated, because I when I did the "five things I haven't already mentioned on my blog" I added a sixth one just in case I got tagged for this one. :) If I can come up with 6 more things, maybe I'll do another post ... since all my crafting is secret right now.

I love your 6 things! Barefoot at school is totally awesome. I would have wanted to be your friend. I remember eating Miracle Whip out of the jar with a spoon saying, "Mmmm, ice cream," and watching my mother cringe.

Running on Ice used to be one of my favorite songs. I confess I make my almost 4yo listen to the Dixie Chicks in my car.

I've also had dirt in the bed. I work hard at things ( including gardening ), as I know if I take a break, I may not go back to it.

Hence, I fall into bed, exhausted, happy, and the great unwashed ;)

I think I'm left speechless by the Billy Joel admission. Thank you for sharing that deep, dark, intimate secret! (I think you're probably trying reverse physchology...so your son doesn't grow up to listen to Billy Joel, Michael Bolton, John Mayer, or ...)

Tagged? Me?
OK, I'd better get writing.
Billy Joel? That's funny!
Crisco is classic...I had a another friend who ate Mayonaise out of the jar. I thought that
was surprising. I used to eat the
homemade play-doh even though it was super salty. Not a lot of it, maybe a pinch. Oh, and I loved eating that glue paste in elementary school...It came in plastic little jars to glue construction paper.

I have never eaten lard straight from the can but my Grandma used to work in the cafeteria at a college here and she would bring home butter pats and we would have to peel the paper off and put them in tubs for her. Don't think I didn't enjoy eating those butter pats plain. One for me, one for the tub- that sort of thing. She would also put butter on graham crackers for us and make sandwiches. Mmmmm butter.

my hens were disgusted as the night before my wedding I climbed into the beautiful clean sheeted antique bed with grubby feet - i wouldn't have noticed! bare feet are the best. here in england we wait all winter to release our feet and feel grass underfoot - bliss!

Wow -- would've loved to go to a school that allowed bare feet.

And, my college roommate once told me that she and her brother would get roundly scolded, often, for eating raw bacon. Crisco seems . . . safer . . . and somehow healthier . . . than that!

Surprising, weird, whatever. It is all good and all wonderful. I get dirt in my bed and while I might not have gone a year without shoes, I do like to go without. But I also like shoes - comfortable ones though - oh what a paradox. It was lovely getting to know you more and I could have talked longer. Hey and Storm Front was very important album to my teenage self. Talk about dating myself!

Veddy intervesting...

What's up with everything being compared with "crackers in the bed"? Are crackers something that everyone used to eat while in bed? I've never really understood it. Why not potato chips, or popcorn?

I'm not even going there with the Crisco. Urp. Thanks for letting us see these surprising tidbits!

Oh finally, someone else who has has the same music in their car for a year! My friends think it is very weird but my 5 year old thinks it's very weird that other people change their music all the time! I love Billy but my music is the Pigram Brothers, an Australian Band. Best wishes from Australia.

Just for the record my
earlier comment, "Tagged? Me?..."
wasn't meant to be anonymous.
Somehow it must have been a technical difficulty and my link didn't connect.
So, yeah, that was me.

The Dad thing is awesome. I went nearly ten years without mine and we're still not acknowledging it. I guess there are some things that are universal.

I'm sorry to bother you but I was looking for a Katie McGinnis that lived in the Bay area of California. I couldn't find anything about her so I thought I would try her friend Michelle Kitchen. This was in grade school but I figured I'd take a shot. If you happen to have any information please feel free to write an e-mail to ambershiree@aol.com. Thank you for your time,
Amber Hall
